City Jail

The Huntington Park Police Department operates its own City Jail, which is one of 422 jail facilities in California.  This 32 bed facility is a Type 1 Jail and houses both misdemeanor and felony unsentenced prisoners prior to their arraignment and transfer to the custody of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s main jail.  An average month produces approximately 260 bookings and prisoner processing’s, including our new live scanning.

The Huntington Park Jail also houses inmate workers during the weekends, these prisoners are sentenced to the inmate worker program in lieu of serving time in the County Jail.  Each jail cell has its own public telephone, which affords those in custody with around the clock unlimited access to phone calls.  For the safety of the employees and the prisoners, each cell is also individually monitored with 24-hour video cameras.

Jail Staff
The Police Department employs five full time, professional jailers, who are non-sworn employees working under the direction of a Lieutenant and directly supervised by a Sergeant.  Required by the State of California, Board of Corrections, each jailer must attend a 120 hour correctional officer academy and receive annual 24 hour updated training.  The jailers, who typically work four ten-hour days, are responsible for the 24 hour a day care and well being of the jail population.  Typical daily duties include the receiving, searching, fingerprinting, photographing of suspects in custody, running automated wants and warrant checks and preparing them for release to court or other agencies.

Career Opportunities
Any person interested in becoming a jailer must be at least  18 years old; be a high school graduate or its equivalent; have two years of experience in general office work or in working with people, and possess a valid California drivers license.  The ability to speak Spanish is also highly desirable.  For additional employment information, contact the Huntington Park Police Department’s Recruiting/Training at (323) 826-6665.
